Photography

I started to take snaps when I was seventeen. On Deepavali my friend and I went to see the other. My father gave me a Yashica SLR (Single Lens Reflection) Camera to take pictures. I was so surprised. I never taught that he saved that camera for me.

On the same day evening, we three went to Marina Beach – Chennai with the fourth friend. We are allowed to take thirty-six snaps, which felt like plenty during that time. We took many pictures, and the outcome is just four. Not a bad start.

My father taught me the basics of the photography. Other friend of my father described the controls in the camera and the purpose of the same. The basics are as below.

Shutter Speed: Set the shutter speed correctly when you are using the flash. Every make of the camera may have different setup. Mostly the preferred shutter speeds are 1/125 of 1/60. Recent cameras allow much faster shutter speeds. This also controls the movement of the objects / shake of the camera.

Aperture: Higher the number, smaller the lens area used. This also affects the depth of the focusing. Lower the number; bigger the lens area results in narrow depth of focusing. This is used for close-up shots, and to make the subject clear, and the background not clear. Same way higher the number results in wider depth of focusing. Used for landscapes, and big group pictures. This setting needs lot of light.

Zoom: If the lens can handle a range of focal lengths, for example 25mm to 55mm, then it is called a zoom lens. Lower the number, wider the coverage angle, higher the number smaller the angle. The depth of focus also the acts same way. For close-up shots, it is better to use higher zoom lens. It is also handy when taking the pictures of the babies, so that you don’t scare or distract the emotions.

The combinations of controlling the shutter speed, aperture, and zoom there are many combinations of artwork can be done.

To see the property of the pictures, first save the image in local machine. Right click the image file, and select properties. Select the summary tab. If needed, select the Advanced option to see the Image Properties. The development of pictures are whole different story involves lot of chemistry. Now we don’t have to worry, since it is all-digital. Lot of software are available with complete documentation gives endless possibilities and probabilities.
